Spring 2000, in a move aimed at enhancing wine quality and controlling costs, Beringer Wine Estates (Nasdaq:BERW) announced plans to develop an in-house cooperage to produce a portion of the company's growing need for high quality wine barrels.
The Fifth Resource, LLC. working with Master Cooper Keith Roberts developed a facility plan and assisted with a site search which resulting in the selection of the Cloverdale.
The Fifth Resource, LLC. processed Conditional Use Permit and Design Review to authorize the expansion of an existing industrial building to accommodate a wine barrel cooperage at 1285 S. Cloverdale Blvd. The Beringer Wine Estates Cooperage involves the production and assembly of oak barrels sized at 60-70 gallons that would be used in the aging of wine at other locations. The cooperage will produce a maximum of 35,000 barrels per year and have a work force of 47 employees. The project includes such improvements as a 1,925 sq. ft. addition to an existing 26,800 sq. ft. building, a sawdust collection system, a paved parking lot, landscaping and fencing. The property is located at the corner of Sandholm road and Foothill Blvd., in the southwest portion of the City.
